"A View to Die For"
(View the invitation to the exhibition)
It is not just the scenery of Provence and Tuscany that draws me to these regions; it's the people, their culture, traditions, and preoccupation with enjoying the present.
My paintings are produced in a state of euphoria, in that I have been seduced by all that is Provence and Tuscany. It is my hope others see in my work a feel for those regions, and their addictive lifestyle.
The works in this exhibition reflect my visit late Summer early Autumn when the landscape is still abundant with flowers, where you are not only intoxicated with their perfume; the ever present cyprus trees; but the surreal feel of your surroundings. It is as if time stands still - where the locals live in time rather than against it.
I suspect there is no cure for my obsession.
"Tall Tales" - John Lovett
John Lovett travels regularly to Europe with International Artist Magazine as a workshop tutor. He enjoys the teaching, traveling and interesting people he meets on the workshops, but one of the spin offs is the chance to accumulate information for exhibitions back in Australia.
Lovett’s recent trip to Italy and Sicily provided the inspiration for his current exhibition, “Tall Tales” which opens at Moulton Galleries in Mosman on the 29th October.
"Tall Tales" is based on the loose interpretation of fascinating incidents, customs and beliefs witnessed in Italy and Sicily. Rather than try and find out the truth, Lovett relied on his own interpretation of what he experienced. Not speaking the language, or understanding many of the local customs allowed for a much freer interpretation. The truth is fine for history books and anthropological studies, but for Lovett, tall tales are the source of much better paintings.
