Natalie Dyer impressed footwear fashion icon Jimmy Choo with her artwork during the Malaysian International Shoe Festival this month.

A PASSION for shoes has laced an Australian artist to one of the world’s most revered footwear designers. Queensland painter Natalie Dyer was the guest of honour at the launch of the new Jimmy Choo Couture line at the Malaysian International Shoe Festival in Kuala Lumpur this month. ‘‘Jimmy Choo was the main attraction for the launch of the festival and because I do paintings of my ladies with shoes in them, I ended up being a guest of honour.’’ It was the first time the Malaysian Ministry of Tourism had invited an Australian artist to the festival.

While there, Dyer showcased her tongue-in-cheek ‘‘Women with Attitude’’ series and impressed the luxury shoe designer with her ‘‘Sole Mates’’ canvas. The month-long festival featured the 10 most successful creations of Jimmy Choo. Dyer participates in exhibitions around Australia and internationally.

NATALIE DYER
An Artist of Substance and Diversity

Natalie Dyer was born in England and during her early childhood lived in Germany, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, New Zealand and finally settled in Sydney, Australia.

Even though she was young, she has good memories of growing up in such different environments – including her memories of the family’s pet monkey “Chippy” while in Kenya, Africa. Natalie had a love for animals and while growing up spent many hours sketching the things she loved.

As a 17 year old she was recognised as having considerable talent and was offered an opportunity in the art studio of a Sydney-based advertising agency. Natalie became a graphic design student at the School of Graphic Design in Sydney prior to technology, when training was rigorous and the students’ illustration, fine art and technical studio skills were highly developed. She then worked within the industry and soon married, setting up a successful advertising art studio with husband Chris.

In 1996, Natalie, Chris and their four children made the move to Brisbane, Queensland where she began to teach art classes and paint full time. Eventually, Natalie and her family discovered the beautiful Sunshine Coast where she established a home and studio, living and painting within the inspirational environment of Noosa. Soon the demand for her art increased to the point where it was impossible to continue teaching.

Today, Natalie exhibits nationally in Australia in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Sydney and Melbourne. Internationally she exhibits in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Offshore auctions are also experiencing a growing demand for her work.

Natalie Dyer is a highly inspired artist. She paints with a genuine gift and has a unique ability to involve her audience as she depicts our everyday lives in a fresh and vibrant way. Natalie enjoys pushing the boundaries between the traditional and the contemporary – feeling equally comfortable in both. Her versatility means that people from all walks of life can identify with, and are uplifted by her paintings – keeping her constantly busy in her favourite place, her studio.

Natalie’s “Women with Attitude” series – is a whimsical look at what women today just love to do – they are as popular as her enchanting, softly-flowing girls walking in a haze of lavender fields or along quiet beaches. Vibrant flowers and rich, colourful abstracts also tantalise art lovers, whilst her landscapes, streetscapes and seascapes will often showcase the beauty of her surrounding.

Any work that Natalie paints illustrates in a very obvious way her creative and technical skills gathered through many years of experience. Natalie was trained as a young student at the School of Graphic Design in Sydney prior to technology, when training was rigorous and students’ illustration and other fine art skills were highly developed. She then worked within the industry, moving on to set up her own successful art studio. Moving to sunny Queensland from Sydney, Natalie taught art classes for a number of years, but is now happiest when painting from her studio in Noosa, Australia.

Natalie’s professionalism, diversity and storytelling has found her much approval with art buyers and collectors from around the world, with much of her work hanging in private collections. Unlike many artists, Natalie loves commission work and consequently much of her time is spent this way.

Through her work, Natalie seeks to give her viewers a little bit of “time out” to appreciate the little, but important things in life that can sometimes be overlooked. Much of her influence comes from the Masters, her favourite being John Singer Sargent. His amazing portraits inspire Natalie’s passion for portraiture. Modern-day masters such as Frederick McCubbin, Richard Schmidt and David Leffel also inspire her, as does Modigliani, who constantly challenged what was regarded as acceptable art of his day.

Natalie was recently honoured by being selected as the commissioned artist to complete 225 paintings for one of Australia’s brand new award-winning 5-star boutique hotels in Perth, Western Australia – The Richardson.

Natalie participates in exhibitions around Australia and is represented in galleries on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast as well as Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
